Jean-Pascal van Ypersele is a Physicist specialized in climatology (PhD: 1986, Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium). His PhD research work was done at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

He is full professor of climatology and environmental sciences at UCL, specialized in the modelling of climate change and its effects on human activities. He authored papers on subjects including the modelling of sea ice, paleoclimates, the climate of the 20th and 21st century, regional climate change in Europe, Greenland, and Africa, and the ethical issues associated with responsibility for climate change. More recently, he has worked with economists on the integrated assessment modelling of climate stabilisation.
